Smart Tap: NFC Pass acceptance

Google Wallet uses Smart Tap technology which lets customers use any Pass (including giftcards) they Add to Google Wallet. They simply hold their phone to any NFC point-of-sale terminal to redeem their Pass.

Is this something that’s available or will be soon through Square at all? I noticed that Tap to Pay on iPhone is in it’s early stages, but wasn’t sure if there’s any capability for Android.

 Currently Smart Tap isn’t supported with Android and Square. We’re constantly working to improve our features based on feedback like this, so I’ll be sure to share your request to the API product team. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you! I think it would be super helpful both for simplifying customer payment, and increasing employee productivity to include Google Smart Tap functionality for Square Gift Cards.

It has the ability for any pass (including closed loop gift cards) to be easily saved on Google Wallet with push provisioning in a single tap. It also allows customers to use the tap-to-pay capabilities at any NFC point-of-sale terminals Square already uses (this has no interchange fee from Google and is beneficial for everyone involved).

That’s one tap adding to digital wallets, one tap payments in store. Easy organization of Cards instead of digging through a mess of emails at the checkout lane. It can even notify users with the enabled feature that they have an active gift card while shopping in the store’s vicinity.

Just a thought, and a few links to potentially pass on to the Product Team!

Thanks, I’ll definitely pass along the information. :slightly_smiling_face:

Would love the ability for a Terminal to be able to be used to connect an upcoming payment to a loyalty account.

As a use case, imagine a mainstream cinema, where the user “taps on” as part of the payment process, and then receives a discount. Let’s say they turn up to see “Top Gun” and they’re part of a loyalty program that gives 10% discount to members, or even, special pricing to members. They would “tap on” to receive that discount; I’m assuming it would push through to the POS terminal via a webhook, but not sure, obviously timeliness in delivery of this particular webhook would be critical, if it was a webhook at all.

This may be ridiculous, and if so I apologize; I fully confess to not having thought it through. It may be that we need to implement our own NFC login somehow and tie it in with the Cinema POS somehow.

@BrianC this use case is possible today. It doesn’t take place at the time the customer taps their card but if your custom POS knows who the customer is and they’re enrolled in the Loyalty Program or part of a Customer Group you can configure a discount. These discounts will then be applied to the sale. :slightly_smiling_face:
