I’m working on OnMe, a UK app for bars and restaurants. We want to use Square for two payment flows:
Customers purchase from participating businesses. Each business connects its own Square account through OAuth, and OnMe automatically collects a commission using app_fee_money.
Businesses pay OnMe a separate monthly subscription for using the platform.
Could you please confirm:
• Is this setup supported for UK businesses?
• Can we charge the separate monthly business subscription through the Subscriptions API?
• Does each participating business need its own verified Square account?
• Are any additional approvals required before launching?
• Can OnMe receive its commission and subscription payouts into a verified Tide business current account?
• How would refunds and disputes affect the commission collected?
We understand that mobile app store billing requirements must be checked separately. We would appreciate confirmation from the Square team before proceeding with the integration.
Yes, these can be handled as two separate payment flows:
Customer purchases: Each business connects its own payment-enabled UK Square account through OAuth. Process payments using that seller’s token and include app_fee_money for OnMe’s commission. OnMe also needs a payment-enabled UK/GBP Square account and the PAYMENTS_WRITE_ADDITIONAL_RECIPIENTS permission. You can read more about it here and here.
Monthly subscriptions: Use the Subscriptions API under OnMe’s own Square account, with each business created as OnMe’s customer. A monthly plan and a card on file, with recurring-payment consent, support automatic billing. This is separate from the seller’s OAuth connection.
Each participating business must complete Square verification and payment activation. No special application-fee approval or App Marketplace listing is required for an unlisted integration, although standard account and production requirements apply.
For Tide, we can’t confirm compatibility for the specific account here. It must pass Square’s bank verification and support both credits and debits. Please confirm the account’s eligibility with Square Support.
Refunds return the commission proportionately by default. API-initiated refunds can specify a different application-fee contribution. For disputes where the seller is liable for the full sale, Square’s documented policy lets OnMe retain its application fee. Please refer to refund details / dispute details.
