I would like to use the SQUARE terminal as a self help Donation Device, where a small set of FIXED but defined buttons are display and touching the button amount starts the “CHARGE” process. This is like a GOODBOX but as I use Square terminal for other reasons, I would like to use it in this way. It was mentioned in a form discussion that Square are looking to incorporate this facility back in 2022.
is this functionality available in some way

As you noted, this isn’t something that’s available through the Terminal API today. The API currently supports creating checkout requests with a specific amount, but doesn’t offer a way to display custom buttons or a menu of preset amounts directly on the Terminal’s screen.
That said, a common workaround is to build a simple app (e.g., on a tablet) that displays your preset amount buttons, and then sends the selected amount to the Terminal as a checkout via the Terminal API. That way you get the custom UI you need while still using the Terminal for payment processing.

I have already done what you stated by using an Tablet to provide the UI and use the terminal API to create a checkout. Its a simple website atm

However, this add considerable extra logistics in back end services to support this and mechanical logistics to mount a tablet and square terminal.
This is deployed in many organizations but impractical when location prohibits it, due to size and other constraints
I am not proposing using Terminal API at all but a function of the Square terminal firmware it self.
The SUMUP Solo has this built in.
The USE CASE for this is for a quick donation in religious organizations when one goes for prayer (particularly in the SIKH religion). This is where my solutions which already includes the square terminal are focused.
I think it would be an easy WIN for square and would certainly allow me to offer 100’s of units to such organizations and similar use cases in other religious organisations
