How to Identify id the order is being placed through square drive thru register?

Title:

Hi Square Developer Community,

I have two Square POS registers connected to the same Square location:

Register 1: Drive-Thru
Register 2: Walk-In

I’m developing an Order Confirmation Screen (OCS) application for the drive-thru. My application listens to Square’s order.created and order.updated webhooks to receive order information in real time.

The challenge is that I only want to display orders created from the Drive-Thru register, not orders placed through the Walk-In register.

Since both registers belong to the same Square location, the location_id is identical, and I haven’t found any device or register identifier in the order webhook payload.

My questions are:

Is there any field in the Orders API or webhook payload that identifies which Square POS register created an order?
Is there a way to retrieve the register’s device_id or device_name before the payment is completed?
Can we configure Square POS to automatically attach a unique identifier to orders created from a specific register?
Is there any recommended workaround to distinguish Drive-Thru orders from Walk-In orders in real time?

Important: I need to identify the originating register before payment is processed, as the order must appear on the drive-thru confirmation screen while the customer is still placing their order.

Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Square for Drive-Thru offers an order confirmation screen integration through The Howard Company and Nanonation. That may be worth exploring before building your own.

For a custom integration, the public Orders API doesn’t expose the originating register’s device identifier. Payment device details identify where payment was taken, so they don’t address your pre-payment requirement.

Potential alternatives include using a separate Square location for drive-thru orders and distinguishing them by location_id, or an application-controlled order-entry flow that tracks the lane itself.
