Create Open Order (Open Ticket) from API

We are working on the development of automatic AI agent they will take orders from users. Mostly the orders will be for pickup. So the Idea is that orders will be created automatically thought API and when the customer arrive to the location an employee should be able to see the order open in the Orders tab of the Square Terminal to open it and proceed to payment.

Does the created Order through the API needs an specific characteristics to be able to pick it up in the Square Terminal?

Hi there, thanks for the detailed context on your use case!

Currently, this open order workflow, creating an unpaid order via the Orders API and having staff open it from the Orders tab on Square Terminal to take payment, isn’t officially supported or documented. Orders created through the API without payment can surface on Square devices in some configurations, but the behavior isn’t consistent across POS modes and settings, so we can’t recommend building on it today.

For a supported pickup flow today, the documented pattern is to take payment through the API at order time (creating the paid order with a PICKUP fulfillment), which surfaces the order on the seller’s device for the team to prepare and mark complete when the customer arrives.

That said, your use case is really helpful feedback. I’ll pass it along to our product team. I’d encourage you to check back here, and we’ll share any updates or findings on this workflow as they become available.

Hi Square team,

We are also facing this issue - Unpaid orders created through API are not appearing at POS and KDS. With more AI agents coming, you should support APIs for this flow - order now but pay latter at PICKUP. It will be a great features for Square.
Please bring this feature ASAP and let us know.

Thanks
