Show Square Online items without an "Add to Cart" button (in-store-only products)

Hi all,

I run a retail store and use Square as my POS, with Square Online Plus for our online shop. Some of our best-selling products can’t be sold online (they’re in-store only), but we still want them listed on our website in the right categories so customers can see them.

What I want:

  • The item appears on Square Online in its category, with photos and a description.
  • There is no Add to Cart button (or it’s replaced with something like “Available in store”).
  • I don’t have to change inventory counts, since our in-store stock needs to stay accurate in Square.

What I’ve found:

  • The Seller Community says this isn’t natively supported.
  • Setting stock to 0 hides the purchase option but shows “Sold Out,” and it throws off our real inventory.
  • Hiding the items online means they don’t appear in the categories at all.

My questions:

  1. Is there any supported way to display an item on Square Online without a purchase button?
  2. Does Square Online Plus allow site-wide custom code (CSS/JS) that could hide the button for specific items? Or is the Embed element the only option, and does it affect the rest of the page?
  3. Is there a catalog or API setting, such as item online availability, that controls this, and is it supported for sellers?
  4. If none of this is possible, is it on the roadmap?

I’d appreciate any workarounds that other Plus sellers are using. Thanks!

Hey,

I remember tackling a similar issue for one of our customers a while back. You could try doing something like this.

  • Set the item’s online status to Unavailable instead of Hidden. In the Online dashboard you can mark the items as visible, hidden, or unavailable. An unavailable item should still show in its category with photos and description, but it can’t be bought, and your stock counts stay as they are. The button usually reads “Not Available” rather than “Sold Out,” which can look better.
  • Turn off online fulfillment for just that item. Items with no shipping, pickup or delivery method enabled also display as “Not Available.”

Hope this helps!

The suggestion above to set the item to “Unavailable” is an interesting idea, but I’m unable to verify it on my test account. @UtylLabs if you’re to provide the precise steps to set unavailable vs out of stock that would be great!

This forum is better catered towards API/integration questions, we try our best to answer 1st party dashboard and online questions though!

The online site does allow a script to be injected, but any customization there would be fragile and unsupported unfortunately.
