Bug Report – Item Duplication on Web Dashboard Creates Incomplete or Phantom Items

I posted this on the seller community because it is triggered by a bug in the dashboard app, but I wanted to share it here as well as I pull from the API:

Description:

When using the Item Duplication feature on the Square Web Dashboard, I intermittently encounter a bug where the duplication workflow breaks, resulting in incomplete item creation. The new item appears in the dashboard but is missing essential fields in API export and requires manual edits to display properly online.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Log into Square Dashboard (via Chrome on Windows 11).
  2. Navigate to any existing item and click Duplicate.
  3. The item edit window opens, but instead of being editable, a Save or Discard Changes prompt appears immediately.
  4. I am unable to exit this screen normally.
  5. If I refresh the page, the item is created without confirmation.
  6. These phantom items:
  • Do not appear on my online store without manual intervention.
  • Do not have URLs or image URLs in the API export.
  • Are only corrected if I manually edit and save the item to appear online, but did not correct API export (e.g., updating the description).

Intermittency Factors (not guaranteed but observed):

  • Appears more often when a Chrome browser update is pending.
  • May occur while alt-tabbing between windows.
  • Not isolated to one device – believed to have occurred on two different Windows 11 laptops running Chrome.

Examples of Affected Items:

Variation ID Item ID Item Title

VN2YX5FBYWNNAE63RIE4M7HT KYTLTADMWV3GQMCK7N256BMR Iron Will Raw Beef Canine Complete Dinner 12 x 1 lb
2PBKLUBTUYCYAKZQLSOFOFIT LINYVGT2TYLHV3ISOCSSEXUE Iron Will Raw Beef Canine Complete Dinner 6 x 1 lb
6UIDSTSV5Y4AAT7INUIKPLN7 JLEITHSYD4SEZA3OH5DTA3KJ Only One - Purple Sweet Potato - 100 G

These entries were:

  • Missing image URLs and web links via API
  • Not visible on the online store until I edited and saved them manually
  • Created while the bug behavior was active

Impact:

  • Creates items that appear in the dashboard but are incomplete for API or website use.
  • Breaks integration workflows and causes confusion in catalog sync.
  • Introduces risk of missing or invisible product listings online unless manually caught and fixed.

Environment:

  • OS: Windows 11
  • Browser: Google Chrome (latest and one version behind)
  • Square Web Dashboard
  • Square Catalog API (used for export)

Request:
Please investigate this duplication process on the dashboard. I am happy to provide:

@Bryan-Square Thank you for your continued A+ support

Hi @Bryan-Square any update on this bug as the items are still outputting without a web URL in my API call and only items that are affected by this creation type.

I am forced to recreate the items to resolve all issues, I do not want to do that until you have gathered all information you may need
