Is the Card fingerprint consistent across sellers who authorise the same OAuth app?

Hi Square team,

I’m building E-Facts (efacts.ca), a Canadian digital receipts app that sellers will connect through OAuth. We read Payments and Orders data to generate digital receipts for shoppers. I have a few questions about card_details.card.fingerprint:

  1. The Card object docs describe the fingerprint as identifying a card “across multiple locations within a single application.” Does that mean the fingerprint is identical for the same card across different sellers who authorise our app, or is it specific to each seller?
  2. Is the fingerprint present on Interac card-present payments in Canada?
  3. Is the fingerprint the same for a physical card and the same card used through Apple Pay or Google Pay, or different because of the device token?
  4. Can an App Marketplace app add a QR code or link to Square’s digital or printed receipts, or capture the buyer’s phone number or email, so we can deliver the receipt?

We never store card numbers. The fingerprint would be hashed and used only after a shopper has explicitly opted in to link their card to their receipt wallet.

Thanks in advance!

Quick update after searching the forum: I found the answers to Q1 and Q3 in earlier threads (#14586, #11704, #20188). Fingerprints are specific to each seller, and digital wallets produce different fingerprints. Could you confirm that’s still accurate in 2026?

That leaves two open questions:

  1. Is card_details.card.fingerprint populated for Interac card-present payments in Canada?
  2. Is there any supported way for an app to add a QR code, link or custom text to Square’s printed or digital receipts, or to receive the buyer’s receipt email or phone number through the API (with the buyer’s consent)?

Thanks!

Your conclusions are correct and still hold today.

  1. Yes - Interac payments include the fingerprint.
  2. No receipt-template API exists for injecting a QR code image into Square’s native printed or digital receipts.
