Shipping weight has been baked into items for years now, but it looks like there’s still no way to touch it with the API. ToS seems to indicate that using Playwright or something similar to accomplish the feat is forbidden. Are my only options to eat shipping costs, not sell online, or waste hours manually adding weights to catalog items that 150 lines of code could accomplish in seconds?
Thanks for the feedback and understood on the pain points from shipping weight not being exposed through the Catalog API, either for reading or writing. I’m bumping this back up with our product team. To confirm, you are using Square Online and need to add shipping weight to items in Square?
In the meantime, the CSV bulk import in the Square Dashboard does support the shipping weight field, which should save you from updating each item manually.
Using this method, you can modify the Item Library (rather than creating new items), and Square matches on the Token column to update existing records in place. So the workflow is:
- Export your item library from the Dashboard
- Fill in/update the Weight column and save
- Import with the updated file
