Mobile Payments SDK (iOS) – developer in Slovakia: production authorization and testing with a physical reader

Hi,

I’m an iOS developer based in Slovakia. My point-of-sale app Market (for market and craft sellers) already supports SumUp and Stripe Terminal, and I’ve integrated the Square Mobile Payments SDK (iOS 2.6.0). OAuth, token refresh and payments with the mock reader all work in Sandbox. My target is Square sellers in the US, Canada, UK and Australia.

  1. My Square developer account and the application are registered from Slovakia. According to the international development docs this should be fine, since I don’t collect application fees. Could you please confirm that sellers in supported countries will be able to authorize the Mobile Payments SDK in production with this application? (I saw an older thread about authorization_unsupported_country for a UK-based developer.)

  2. Is there a supported way for a developer outside the supported countries to test with a physical Square Reader in production?

  3. Is any review or approval needed before going live with a Square Reader (not Square Stand)?

  4. The SDK bundles OpenTelemetry and swift-log, which the SumUp SDK also bundles, so iOS logs “Class … is implemented in both SquareMobilePaymentsSDK and SumUpSDK”. Is it safe to ship both SDKs in one app?

Production Application ID: sq0idp-2Tp1Gz8PC1xuCQeznVdNXg

Thank you!

  1. I can’t confirm from our side that a Slovakia-registered application will authorize for US/CA/UK/AU sellers in production. Make sure the ID passed to initializeWithApplicationLaunchOptions in the AppDelegate matches the app that issued the OAuth token. Check that first if you hit the error.
  2. A developer account created in a country where Square doesn’t process payments can only be used for Sandbox testing. To test with a physical reader in production, you need a seller account in a supported country, plus a reader for that country (an AU seller needs an AU reader, for example). Payments activation is also blocked from IP addresses outside the account’s country, and US accounts require US identity verification, so you can’t set up a seller account for yourself from Slovakia. The practical route is a real seller in a target market who authorizes your app.
  3. Going live with a Square Reader doesn’t need a review or certification. Production credentials are self-service. Apple MFi approval only applies to Square Stand/Kiosk in App Store builds.
  4. We don’t have a supported workaround or recommend suppressing the warnings. The team is evaluating a fix for this, but it would require a future SDK release and we don’t yet have a timeline.
