I experienced the same thing. It’s ridiculous you haven’t received a response and it’s definitely a bug.
Here’s what I saw: Square Annoyingly Wipes Item Descriptions on New Batch Upsert's of Existing Products – Confirmed Bug + Workaround
Just append one extra character and it’ll be good. No idea why it wipes the description if it’s the same.
